Backhoe Loader

Overview

A backhoe loader is a wheeled machine combining a front Front Loader for loading, levelling and material handling with a rear Rear Backhoe for trenching and excavation. The single operator turns the seat to face whichever end is in use. Mounted on a rigid frame with four road wheels, the machine is road-legal at modest speeds and is the standard tool for utility work, small-site groundwork and municipal maintenance.

Power comes from a 4-cylinder Diesel Engine driving the wheels through a Powershuttle Transmission and a Front Steer Axle (4WD) and Rear Drive Axle. The same engine drives the Hydraulic System that actuate both work tools.

How it works

The engine turns a torque converter and powershuttle gearbox, giving forward and reverse under load without clutching. Drive is split to both axles; the front steer axle carries hydrostatic steering through an Orbitrol unit.

The hydraulic pump feeds two valve banks. The front loader uses lift and tilt cylinders on a parallel-lift frame; the loader bucket can be swapped via the quick coupler for forks or a grapple. The rear backhoe pivots on a king-post swing frame, with boom, dipper and bucket cylinders giving the digging envelope. An extendable dipper stick telescopes for added reach and depth. Two stabilizer legs plant the rear of the machine before digging, transferring load off the tyres so the chassis stays rigid under breakout force.

All digging functions share the double-acting Hydraulic Cylinder design: a barrel, rod, and seal set repeated across loader, backhoe and stabilizers. The operator works from a Cab / ROPS with ROPS protection and twin joysticks. A 12-volt Electrical System system handles starting, charging and the work-light array used for night operation.
