Motor Grader

Overview

A motor grader produces flat, accurately sloped surfaces, road subgrades, gravel roads, ditches, and fine-graded building pads. Its long wheelbase and a moldboard slung between the front and rear axles let it average out ground irregularities and cut to a precise profile. Six driven and steered wheels, frame articulation, and a circle-mounted blade with many degrees of freedom make it the most precise earthmoving machine on a site.

The machine is built on an articulated Articulated Frame carrying the Diesel Engine, the Powertrain, and the Moldboard / Blade Assembly that does the grading.

How it works

The Diesel Engine drives a Powertrain, a powershift transmission feeding a tandem drive axle whose two wheels per side are chain-coupled, keeping all four rear wheels loaded over uneven ground. The Front Axle steers and can lean its wheels into a cut to counter the side thrust of an angled blade, holding the machine on line.

The Moldboard / Blade Assembly hangs from a drawbar pulled by a ball-joint at the frame nose. A large rotating circle lets the blade swing to any angle; saddle-mounted cylinders raise, lower, and side-shift each end independently, so the operator can set bank slope, depth, and pitch. A Scarifier / Ripper or rear ripper loosens compacted material ahead of the blade.

All blade and steering functions run from the Hydraulic System pump, valve bank, and tank. The operator works from an enclosed Operator Cab with dual steering (wheel and joystick), served by the Electrical System system. A GPS Grade Control kit uses GPS or total-station references to drive the blade cylinders automatically, holding design grade to a few millimetres without stakes.
