Pile Driving Cap and Cushion
AssemblyThe pile cap and cushions form the impact interface between a pile-driving hammer and the pile head. The drive helmet locates the pile under the hammer, while the drive insert adapts that interface to the pile section. These are load-transmitting components, not simply covers around the impact point.
The two cushions have different positions and purposes. A hammer cushion sits between the hammer and helmet to reduce damaging shock to the hammer. A pile cushion, where required, protects the pile head and affects how the impact enters the pile. Treating the names as interchangeable hides that distinction. FHWA's driven-pile foundation manual explains the hammer cushion's role, wear, and model-dependent requirements.
More cushioning is not automatically an improvement. FHWA notes that cushion properties change with repeated blows and that incorrect thickness can impair the timing and performance of some hammers. Some hammer designs do not use a conventional hammer cushion at all. The selected hammer and driving system therefore determine the appropriate arrangement.
This pile driver BOM illustrates an impact-driving interface, not a certified driving assembly. It does not specify cushion material, replacement criteria, hammer energy, or allowable pile stresses. Those must come from the hammer documentation and engineered driving requirements. The four listed components should not be copied into a vibratory or direct-drive system merely because both systems install piles.
