Towable Boom Lift

Product

Overview

A towable boom lift is a trailer-mounted aerial work platform designed for high-reach access in construction, power-line maintenance, tree trimming, and commercial building maintenance. The entire unit tows behind a pickup truck or tractor at highway speeds (~80–100 km/h), but operates independently once on-site: operators set the Outrigger Stabilizers, deploy the Boom Assembly, and position the Work Basket at any desired height and reach.

The system combines mobility (portable to any job site) with performance (20–40 m working height, 15–30 m reach) at a lower cost than a truck-mounted platform or renting a tower crane.

Trailer chassis and transport

The Trailer Frame is a welded steel A-frame with a Drawbar Class II or III hitch for safe towing. The Axle Assembly (tandem or single) is supported by Suspension Spring (leaf or coil), providing suspension comfort during highway transport.

Two Wheels and Tires equipped with DOT-rated Tire (radial, 8- or 10-ply LT load rating) and Wheel Rim support highway towing. The unladen trailer weight is typically 3000–5000 kg; maximum highway speed is 80–100 km/h (often governed lower by manufacturers).

Engine and hydraulic power

The Engine and Pump onboard comprises a 40–75 kW Diesel Engine (four-cylinder diesel) driving a Hydraulic Pump (variable-displacement swashplate, 60–100 cc/rev, 280 bar rated). A Cooling Fan engine radiator with thermostatic fan and Air Filter maintain engine health in dusty worksites.

The hydraulic system drives all boom and outrigger movement. A large Reservoir (100–200 L) stores ISO VG 46 anti-wear hydraulic fluid. A Proportional Valve main proportional directional control valve routes flow to boom cylinders and outrigger circuits. Relief Valve pressure relief valves protect at 280 bar. A Hydraulic Cooler hydraulic cooler with thermostatic bypass manages fluid temperature during sustained operations.

Boom configuration

The Boom Assembly assembly is typically a Main Boom primary tube (welded rectangular or lattice section) with one or two Boom Extension telescopic extensions sliding within it. On articulating versions, a Boom Joint pivots between sections allowing the boom to bend.

Three Boom Cylinder (double-acting rod cylinders, 100–200 mm bore) actuate:

  1. Main raise/lower of the primary boom.
  2. Extend/retract the telescopic sections.
  3. Articulate the boom joint (if equipped).

A typical telescoping boom extends from ~6 m retracted to ~20–25 m extended, achieving 20–40 m working height from a chassis height of ~2 m. Articulating booms add bend angles, allowing operators to reach over obstructions or position the basket into confined spaces.

Basket and personnel safety

The Work Basket is a welded-steel or aluminum platform with a Basket Frame rated for 500–1000 kg total payload (2–4 workers plus tools). A Basket Deck perforated flooring provides drainage and anti-slip surface. Basket Rail tubular guardrails (1.1+ m per ANSI A92.1) encircle the basket. A Basket Gate hinged entry gate interlock prevents boom operation while open. The Basket Attachment quick-disconnect coupling attaches the basket to the boom tip.

A Load Cell strain-gauge load sensor in the basket wiring monitors total weight, alerting the operator if payload exceeds safe limits.

Outrigger stabilization

The four towable-boom-lift-outrigger assemblies (one per corner) extend outward on command. Each comprises a Outrigger Beam rectangular-tube arm extending 1–2 m laterally, a wide Outrigger Pad (0.5–1.0 m² foot) distributing load on ground, and a Outrigger Cylinder (double-acting hydraulic) extend/retract the arm. A Outrigger Valve proportional valve controls deployment rate and pressure.

On-site setup typically takes 10–15 minutes: park the trailer level, extend all four outriggers fully, verify ground clearance, and start the engine. Operators in the basket control boom motion via a Control Joystick proportional control joystick. A Pressure Gauge hydraulic pressure display (analog or digital) visible to the operator confirms system health. An Emergency Descent manual descent valve allows controlled basket lowering if the engine dies or proportional solenoids fail.

Operational characteristics

Towable boom lifts are ideal for:

  • Utility maintenance: Power-line trimming and conductor work.
  • Building facade: Window cleaning, signage installation, cladding repair.
  • Tree care: Arborists positioning precisely for limb removal in residential areas.
  • Construction: Fascia, gutters, roofing, material placement at height.
  • Site mobility: Tow to multiple job sites in a single day; independent on-site operation.

Typical operating duty is 8–12 hours daily during construction or maintenance campaigns. Annual maintenance includes hydraulic fluid analysis, seal replacement, hose inspection, and outrigger load-test verification. Boom and basket inspections per ANSI A92.1 are required before use.
