Crawler Tractor

Product

Overview

A crawler tractor is a high-power agricultural tractor that runs on two steel track chains instead of wheels. The tracks spread the machine weight over a long, wide contact patch, so ground pressure stays near 38 kPa even at an operating weight of 17,800 kg. Low ground pressure lets the tractor work soft, wet, or freshly tilled soil without sinking or causing the deep compaction that wheeled tractors leave behind. The large contact area also converts engine torque into traction, so a crawler can sustain a drawbar pull of 162 kN, which is well beyond what a wheeled tractor of similar mass achieves before the tyres slip.

The machine is built from nine major subsystems: the Diesel Engine, the Powershift Transmission, two Final Drive units, two Undercarriage (Track Frame) track frames, the Hydraulic System, the Differential Steering System, the Cab & ROPS, the Electrical System, and the Drawbar & Three-Point Hitch. Power flows from the engine through the torque converter and gearing, splits left and right at the steering differential, then reduces through each final drive to a sprocket that drives one track chain.

Engine and Fuel System

The prime mover is a 6.7 L inline-six turbocharged diesel rated at 224 kW (300 HP). The Cylinder Block carries wet replaceable liners, a seven-bearing forged Crankshaft, and six Piston Assembly units linked to it by forged Connecting Rod sets. The Cylinder Head is a 24-valve crossflow casting with a Glow Plug per cylinder for cold starting.

Air is force-fed by a variable-geometry Turbocharger (VGT) whose Inconel turbine wheel runs at exhaust-gas temperature, then cooled in the Charge-Air Cooler before it reaches the intake. Fuel is metered by the Common-Rail Fuel Injection system: a high-pressure pump charges the Common Fuel Rail to 2000 bar, and six piezo Piezo Fuel Injector units fire several times per combustion event for quiet, clean burning. The Engine Cooling Package package, with its Radiator Core, viscous Viscous Cooling Fan, and belt-driven Coolant Water Pump, holds coolant temperature steady under continuous full-load tillage.

Powertrain

Engine torque enters the Powershift Transmission through a Torque Converter that multiplies torque at low track speed and locks up at higher speed for efficiency. Sixteen forward and four reverse ratios are selected by engaging combinations of wet Wet Clutch Pack units, each built from interleaved Friction Disc and Separator Plate stacks pressed by a hydraulic Clutch Piston. The Transmission Control Valve modulates clutch pressure with proportional solenoids so shifts happen under load without breaking traction.

Output divides to the left and right Final Drive assemblies. Each final drive takes the transmission output through a bull Helical Gear Pair and a Planetary Gear Set, multiplying torque roughly 14 times before it reaches the Drive Sprocket. The sprocket carries bolt-on Sprocket Tooth Segment teeth that can be replaced when worn rather than scrapping the whole wheel. A wet Wet Disc Service Brake sits inside each final drive housing, sealed away from dirt.

Undercarriage

The Undercarriage (Track Frame) is the part that defines a crawler and the part that wears fastest. Each side carries a Track Chain (link assembly) made of 90 Track Link halves joined by 45 Track Pin and Track Bushing pairs. A 610 mm single-grouser Track Shoe (grouser) bolts to every link, giving the bite that produces drawbar pull. The chain wraps the Drive Sprocket at the rear, the Front Idler Wheel at the front, two upper Carrier Roller (upper) units, and seven lower Track Roller (lower) units that carry the machine weight to the ground. Rollers and idlers use lifetime-lubricated cavities sealed by duo-cone Oil Seal faces and supported on Ball Bearing sets. A Track Recoil Spring and the grease-filled Track Tension Adjuster keep chain tension correct and absorb shock when the tracks strike rocks.

Steering and Hydraulics

A crawler has no steered axle. The Differential Steering System uses a hydrostatic differential steer: a Hydrostatic Steer Motor feeds a Steering Planetary Unit unit that speeds up one track and slows the other by an equal amount, so the machine turns smoothly while both tracks keep pulling. Full counter-rotation gives a tight turn in a field corner without disturbing soil the way a braked-track turn would.

The Hydraulic System is a closed-centre load-sensing circuit. A variable Variable Piston Pump supplies up to 160 L/min only as the implement demands it. The Implement Valve Block routes flow to the Lift Cylinder pair that raises the rear linkage and to remote couplers for implement functions, with a Pressure Relief Valve capping system pressure.

Cab, Electrical, and Implement Interface

The operator works inside the Cab & ROPS, a sealed and pressurised structure rated for roll-over and falling-object protection. It holds an air-suspension Air-Suspension Seat, a Cab HVAC Unit with filtered air, a Control Console with a multifunction joystick, and a In-Cab Display Terminal for engine and guidance data. The Electrical System centres on a Vehicle Control ECU that supervises engine, transmission, and steering through a Wire Bundle and dozens of Connector and Relay points, fed by an Alternator and two batteries through a Starter Motor.

Work reaches the ground through the Drawbar & Three-Point Hitch. The Three-Point Linkage carries mounted tillage tools, the swinging Swinging Drawbar tows trailed implements, and the Power Take-Off Unit sends 1000 rpm rotary power to driven equipment.
