Dairy Homogenizer
ProductOverview
A dairy homogenizer reduces the size of fat globules in milk and similar emulsions by forcing the product through a narrow valve gap at very high pressure. The result is a stable emulsion that resists creaming and separation. The machine combines a Pump Unit that builds pressure, a Pressure Stages valve assembly that performs the size reduction, a Drive Motor supplying mechanical power, and supporting subsystems for safety, pulsation control, cooling, and process control.
Pump unit
Pressure comes from a positive-displacement piston pump. The Pump Unit uses a Piston Block with five to nine radial cylinder bores. A rotating Eccentric Cam on the Pump Drive Shaft pushes each piston in turn, drawing product through the Suction Manifold on the intake stroke and expelling it through the Discharge Manifold on the pressure stroke. Staggering the pistons around the cam smooths the delivery, so the flow leaving the pump is close to pulseless even though each cylinder works in discrete strokes.
Homogenizing valve stages
Size reduction happens at the Pressure Stages assembly, where pressurized product is throttled across a narrow gap. The First Stage Valve takes most of the pressure drop: as fluid accelerates through the gap, shear, cavitation, and sudden pressure release tear the fat globules apart. A Second Stage Valve with a smaller orifice follows, breaking up clusters that re-form after the first stage and producing a finer, more uniform emulsion. The valve faces sit on a sapphire or tungsten carbide seat to survive the erosive flow. A Bypass Valve modulates backpressure and flow split, and the whole group is bored into a single Valve Block manifold.
Drive and speed control
The Drive Motor converts electrical power into the slow, high-torque rotation the pump needs. A Electric Motor of 5 to 30 kW feeds a Gearbox that reduces speed to the working range, with a Motor Coupling isolating motor vibration from the crank. A VFD Drive varies motor frequency, which sets pump speed and therefore flow rate. Running the pump faster or slower changes throughput without altering the valve setting that fixes homogenizing pressure.
Safety and pressure protection
Because the pump can generate destructive pressure if the discharge is blocked, the Safety System guards against over-pressure. A direct-acting Main Relief valve set near 400 to 600 bar vents the line before damage occurs, while a Pilot Relief gives finer adjustment of the working setpoint. A Check Valve on the discharge prevents reverse flow, and a Pressure Gauge gives the operator a direct reading at the pump outlet.
Pulsation damping
Even with staggered pistons, residual pressure ripple remains in the discharge. The Dampening assembly smooths it. A gas-charged Pulsation Damper absorbs flow spikes through a bladder backed by nitrogen, set through the Accumulator Precharge valve to roughly nine-tenths of the minimum system pressure. The smoothed flow then leaves through the Damper Outlet toward the first valve stage. Lower ripple means quieter operation, longer valve life, and steadier homogenizing pressure.
Cooling
Compressing and throttling the product adds heat. The Cooling Jacket keeps the discharge within a safe range. A Discharge Cooler, usually a plate or tube-and-shell exchanger, rejects heat to a cooling-water loop circulated by a Cooling Pump. A Temperature Valve blends flow to hold the outlet within a couple of degrees of setpoint, and a Outlet Thermometer confirms the result. Controlling discharge temperature protects product quality and downstream processes such as pasteurization.
Process control
The Control Unit coordinates the machine. A Flow Meter on the discharge measures actual throughput, and a Control PLC compares it against setpoint, commanding the motor drive and trimming the Proportional Solenoid that pilots the bypass valve. The operator sets flow limits, pressure targets, and reads alarms from a sealed Touch Panel. Together these elements hold flow and pressure steady so every batch receives the same homogenizing treatment.
