Industrial Coffee Grinder

Product

Overview

An industrial coffee grinder reduces whole roasted beans to a controlled particle size at production scale. Unlike a shop grinder that runs in short bursts, this machine grinds continuously, typically 300 to 1200 kg per hour, and holds the particle size distribution within a tight band because brew quality and extraction yield depend on it. Espresso blends are ground near 250 to 400 micron, drip and filter grades sit around 500 to 800 micron, and percolator or cold-brew grinds run coarser at 900 to 1100 micron.

The machine is organized as a line. Beans enter the Feed System, pass through the Grinding Unit, get screened in the Classifier / Sifter, rest in the Degassing Normalizer, and leave through Weighing & Discharge. Around those stages sit the Dust Aspiration system, the Drive & Transmission, the Control Panel, and the Frame & Enclosure.

Feed and Dosing

Roasted beans drop into the Feed Hopper, a conical 304 stainless reservoir with a 60 degree wall angle so beans flow without bridging. A Bin Vibrator knocks the cone if flow stalls, and a Hopper Grate blocks roasting debris. Two capacitive Level Sensor points report high and low fill so the upstream conveyor can refill on demand.

Metering is the job of the Dosing Auger, a variable-speed screw that delivers a steady mass flow into the chamber. Feeding at a constant rate matters: a flooded grind chamber overheats and shifts the particle size, while a starved chamber wastes roll capacity. A Rotary Airlock Valve acts as an airlock so the aspiration draw on the chamber does not pull air back up the hopper, and a Magnet Trap catches stray ferrous metal before it reaches the rolls.

Grinding

The core of the machine is the Grinding Unit. Three Roller Pair stages do the bulk of the work: each pair is a set of counter-rotating fluted rolls running at a speed differential, usually around 2.5 to 1, so beans are sheared rather than crushed. Shearing produces a narrower particle distribution and fewer fines than impact milling, which is why roller mills dominate large-scale coffee grinding. The first pass cracks the bean, the second reduces it, and the third sets the bulk size. A final Burr Set, a conical burr cone and ring of hardened tool steel, trims the espresso grades to the fine end of the range.

Each Grinding Roller is chilled cast iron, 250 mm in diameter, hardened to about 60 HRC, and cut with fine flutes that wear slowly under the abrasive load of roasted beans. Roll gap is the main quality lever. Two Gap Actuator units, each a Ball Screw driven by a Servo Motor, set the gap under load, and a Gap Sensor reads roll separation to 5 micron so the controller can hold size as the rolls warm and wear. Grinding releases heat, so a Cooling Jacket circulates chilled water and keeps the temperature rise under 12 C, which protects the volatile aromatics that carry flavor. Scraper Blade elements clear packed fines off the roll faces, and the whole chamber rides on Ball Bearing supports inside a cast Chamber Housing.

Classifying and Normalizing

Even a good roller mill produces some oversize and some fines, so the ground stream goes to the Classifier / Sifter. Two Sieve Deck screens, driven by an eccentric-weight Vibratory Motor at 1500 rpm, split the flow by aperture, typically 250 to 600 micron. On-size product passes through, while oversize runs down the Reject Chute back to the grind chamber. Rubber Sieve Cleaning Ball balls bounce under each deck to keep the Sieve Mesh from blinding.

From the sifter, product enters the Degassing Normalizer. Fresh grind off the rolls is loaded with carbon dioxide from roasting, and packing it straight away swells bags and slows degassing. A slow Normalizer Drum tumbles the powder for several minutes, folding it with a twin helical ribbon so CO2 vents evenly through the CO2 Vent Valve and a Moisture Probe confirms the grind sits in spec before discharge.

Discharge, Aspiration, and Control

Finished coffee is batched in the Weighing & Discharge stage. A Weigh Hopper hangs on three Load Cell shear beams that weigh each batch to 0.1 percent, then a Discharge Valve opens and a Bag Spout Clamp seals the bag spout during fill. Coffee dust is fine and explosive in suspension, so the Dust Aspiration system pulls dust-laden air off every transfer point. A Cyclone Separator drops out coarse dust, a pulse-jet Bag Filter captures fines to below 1 mg per cubic meter, and a Pressure Sensor watches filter pressure drop.

Power flows through the Drive & Transmission, where a helical Reduction Gearbox and two Variable Frequency Drive drives set roll speed and the differential. The Control Panel holds a PLC Module that sequences feed, grind, sift, and weigh, plus a HMI Touch Panel touch panel for recipes and diagnostics.

Materials, Variants, and Use

Product-contact parts are 304 or 316 stainless steel and chilled cast iron on the roll faces, both chosen to resist the acids and oils in roasted coffee and to survive frequent washdown. Variants scale by roll count and width: a compact two-pass machine handles 300 kg/h for a regional roaster, while a five-pass wide-roll line reaches 1200 kg/h or more for instant-coffee and capsule producers. Espresso-focused lines add the burr stage and tighter gap control, whereas filter and cold-brew lines drop the burr and widen the sieve. These grinders sit downstream of the roaster and cooler and upstream of bagging or extraction, and they run for years on a duty cycle of routine roll regrinding, bearing service, and filter-bag replacement.
