Industrial Pellet Mill

Product

Overview

An industrial pellet mill compacts a ground, conditioned meal into dense cylindrical pellets by forcing it through the holes of a rotating ring die. It is the central machine in animal-feed, aquafeed, and biomass-fuel plants, where loose mash is hard to handle and pellets store, flow, and dose far better. This machine is a ring-die design rated at 8–14 t/h on a 6 mm feed pellet, driven by a 160 kW motor. Material enters as a fine meal, leaves the die hot and soft at around 85 C, and is then cooled and screened before bagging or bulk loading.

The build splits into seven subsystems: the feed and conditioning system, the pelleting chamber, the main drive train, the lubrication system, the electrical control panel, the frame and housing, and the discharge and cooling system. Each carries its own bearings, drives, and wear parts, so plants stock spares by subsystem rather than for the machine as a whole.

How it works

Ground meal drops from an upstream surge bin onto a variable-speed feed screw that meters it forward at a rate the operator trims against motor load. The screw delivers meal into a steam conditioner, a paddle barrel where dry saturated steam from the steam manifold raises the mash to 80–90 C and roughly 16 percent moisture. Heat and moisture gelatinise starch and soften the mix, which cuts die wear and binds the finished pellet.

Conditioned mash falls through the feed chute and a rotating spreader cone lays it evenly across the die width. Inside the chamber, two press rolls ride against the inner face of the die. The die turns; friction drags mash into the wedge between roll and die, and the roll squeezes it through the bores. Strands extrude from the outer face and a cut-off knife shears them to length. The gap between each roll and the die is set to 0.1–0.4 mm by an eccentric roll gap adjuster; too wide and the mill slips, too tight and the rolls and die wear fast.

Drive and protection

The main motor turns the main shaft through a V-belt set, giving a die peripheral speed near 6 m/s. The shaft runs on heavy spherical roller bearings sized for the radial press load. A shear-pin coupling sits in the drive line: if a tramp object or a sudden choke jams the die, the pin shears and protects the gearing and die from a torque spike. Belt drive also gives some shock absorption that a direct gearbox would pass straight through.

The press rolls themselves spin on sealed roller bearings packed against meal ingress, since dust and steam are the main enemies of bearing life here. Roll shells are a replaceable wear item: a corrugated roll shell is changed on a service interval well before the die is.

Materials

The ring die is the costliest wear part and the one that sets pellet quality. It is forged from a chromium stainless steel such as X46Cr13, gun-drilled with hundreds to thousands of bores, then nitrided or carburised for hole-wall hardness. Hole geometry, the bore diameter and the compression length, fixes pellet hardness and the mill's throughput. The main shaft is 42CrMo4 alloy steel for fatigue strength, and contact surfaces in the conditioner and chute that touch wet mash are stainless to resist corrosion. Roll shells are case-hardened 20MnCr5 so the grip teeth hold an edge.

Cooling and screening

Pellets leave the die hot and plastic, so they cannot be bagged directly. The discharge chute drops them into a counterflow cooler, where a exhaust fan pulls ambient air up through a slowly descending pellet bed. Counterflow brings the coolest air to the coolest pellets at the bottom, which avoids thermal shock that would crack them. A sliding discharge grate meters cooled pellets out while a bed level sensor holds the bed depth. From there a vibrating fines screen separates broken fines, which return upstream for re-milling, and a rotary airlock discharges the screened pellets while sealing cooler airflow.

Control and lubrication

The control panel holds a PLC that watches main-motor amperage and modulates the feed VFD to hold the mill near rated load without choking the die. An operator HMI shows load, conditioning temperature, and recipe setpoints. Steam, feed rate, and safety interlocks all route through the same controller. The lubrication system runs a metered grease cycle to every roll, main, and feed bearing through a progressive distributor, with a pressure sensor that flags a blocked line before a bearing runs dry. Standard bearings throughout the machine are deep-groove ball bearings on the lighter drives.

Variants and use

Capacity scales mainly with die diameter and motor rating: small plants run 90 kW machines at 3–5 t/h, large feed lines run 250 kW machines past 25 t/h. Aquafeed mills add longer compression dies and tighter conditioning for water-stable pellets, while wood-pellet mills use harder dies and abrasion-resistant rolls because sawdust is far more abrasive than grain. Die and roll selection, not the frame, is what an operator changes most often when switching products.
