Flour Milling Plant

Overview

A flour milling plant turns raw wheat into graded flour through a sequence of stages: receiving and cleaning, conditioning, gradual grinding on roller mills, sifting, purification, and finally blending and packing. The whole building runs under slight negative pressure, with pneumatic conveying and aspiration tying every machine into a common air system. A mid-size plant grinds 150 to 300 tons of wheat per 24 hours and recovers 72 to 78 percent of the kernel as white flour, with the remaining fraction leaving as bran and wheat feed.

The plant is organized vertically over four to six floors so that gravity does much of the transport. Grain and intermediate stock are lifted to the top by Bucket Elevator units and by pneumatic lifts, then flow down through the Grinding Section and Sifting Section machines. The result is the gradual reduction system: instead of crushing wheat in one pass, the mill opens the kernel gently and scrapes the white endosperm off the bran over many passages, keeping bran specks out of the flour and protecting color.

Intake and cleaning

Wheat arrives by truck or rail into the Receiving Hopper and is lifted through the Intake & Cleaning Section section. A Drum Pre-Cleaner scalps straw and string first. The grain then passes a Vibrating Separator that grades it by size, a Gravity Destoner that lifts out stones and mud balls by specific gravity, and Aspiration Channel sections that draw off light chaff and dust. Magnet Drawer units on the chutes remove tramp iron, and a Horizontal Scourer abrades dust and loose bran skin off the kernel surface. A Optical Color Sorter makes the final pass, ejecting discolored, ergot-affected or foreign seeds. Clean wheat leaving this section carries well under 0.5 percent foreign matter.

Conditioning

Cleaned wheat is too dry and too brittle to mill well, so the Conditioning Section section adds water and rests the grain. A Water Dosing Skid skid reads the grain flow with a Grain Flow Sensor and a Moisture Sensor, then meters water through the Intensive Dampener to a target of 15.5 to 16.5 percent moisture for hard wheat. The grain rests in Tempering Bin cells for 18 to 36 hours. During this rest the moisture migrates inward: the bran toughens so it stays in flakes during grinding, while the endosperm mellows so it shears cleanly. Correct tempering is what makes a high extraction rate possible without contaminating the flour with bran.

Grinding

The heart of the plant is the Grinding Section section, a bank of roller mills. The first passages are Break Roller Mill units fitted with Fluted Grinding Roll pairs. The two rolls turn at different speeds, typically a 2.5 to 1 differential, so the corrugations shear the kernel open and scrape endosperm off the bran rather than crushing it to powder. Roll diameter is around 250 mm and the gap is set in microns by a Roll Gap Adjuster. Each successive break runs a tighter gap and finer corrugation. After the breaks, Reduction Roller Mill units carry Smooth Grinding Roll pairs that crush the graded semolina and middlings down to flour fineness. A Impact Detacher follows the reduction rolls to break up flakes before they reach the sieves. Feed to every mill is metered by a Feed Roll Assembly that lays an even curtain of stock across the full roll length.

Sifting and purification

After each grinding pass the stock is graded by particle size in the Sifting Section section. A Plansifter is a stack of gyrating Sieve Frame screens hung on flexible canes; finished flour passes the finest meshes at around 132 to 180 microns, while coarser fractions are routed back to the next grinding passage. The Purifier Section section handles the in-between fractions: a Purifier Unit uses an oscillating sieve with controlled upward air to lift bran-bearing particles off pure semolina, so only clean endosperm goes forward to the reduction rolls. A Bran Finisher scrubs the last flour off the bran flakes before they leave as feed. This loop of grind, sift, purify, and re-grind is repeated across all the passages until the endosperm is exhausted.

Conveying, control and packing

The Pneumatic Conveying & Aspiration section moves stock between floors in moving air and keeps the building under negative pressure for dust safety. Conveying Fan units drive the airflow, Cyclone Separator separators drop product out of the air, and a Pulse-Jet Filter recovers fine flour dust before the air is exhausted. Rotary Airlock valves seal every material drop against air leakage. The Control & Automation section, built around a PLC Control Cabinet and a Motor Control Centre, sequences the machines, holds roll gaps and feed rates, and logs production from the Operator Station. Finished streams collect in the Blending & Packing Section section, where a Flour Silo bank feeds a Blending Screw, additives are metered by a Dosing Feeder, and a Net-Weigh Bagging Scale fills bags to net weight. Total connected power runs 600 to 1,200 kW, with specific grinding energy of 60 to 90 kWh per ton of wheat.

Materials and use

Grinding rolls are chilled cast iron for surface hardness, sieve frames use tensioned bolting silk or nylon, and food-contact troughs and chutes are stainless steel. The building steel and machine bodies are painted carbon steel sitting on Machine Mount anti-vibration frames. Plants are built for continuous duty in commercial flour mills supplying bakeries, pasta makers and retail packers, running weeks at a time between cleaning shutdowns.
