Vegetable Washing Line

Overview

A vegetable washing line is a continuous machine that receives bulk harvested produce, removes field soil and debris, applies a sanitizing wash, rinses with fresh water, and dewaters the product before it moves on to cutting, packing, or freezing. The line links several wet-process stations end to end so that produce flows from the field crate to a clean inspection belt without manual rehandling. A typical mid-size line processes 2-10 tonnes per hour depending on the crop, with leafy greens running at the lower end because of their fragility and root vegetables at the higher end.

The whole machine is built from corrosion-resistant materials and follows hygienic design rules so it can be cleaned daily. The water side is closed where possible: the Water Recirculation & Filtration Skid skid recovers and filters the bulk wash water, while only the final Fresh-Water Spray Rinse uses fresh potable water. This keeps fresh-water use to roughly 0.5-2 litres per kilogram of product.

Stations along the line

Produce enters at the Infeed Hopper & Elevation Conveyor, a stainless Dump Hopper feeding a cleated Cleated Incline Belt that lifts the load into the first wash stage. From there the product passes into the Pre-Wash Soak Tank, an immersion soak tank that loosens caked soil. Root crops then run through the Rotary Brush Washer, a bank of counter-rotating Spiral Brush Roller units that scrub skins clean. Leafy crops skip the brushes and instead float through the Water Flume Channel, a gentle water channel that carries them without bruising.

After the main wash, product is lifted onto the Fresh-Water Spray Rinse belt, where overhead nozzle banks apply clean water. It then crosses the Dewatering & Air-Knife Dryer to shed surface water, and finally reaches the Takeaway & Inspection Conveyor where operators remove any off-grade pieces under bright Washdown LED Fixture lighting. The Drive & Transmission and Control Panel coordinate every station, and the entire assembly sits on a washdown Frame & Hygiene Base.

How it works

In the pre-wash tank, a Regenerative Air Blower feeds a perforated Air Sparger Manifold that bubbles air up through the water. The rising bubbles tumble the produce and float light soil and leaves to the surface, where a Floating Debris Screen skims them off. A submerged Submerged Paddle Wheel moves the product slowly toward the tank exit while heavy stones and clods drop out at the bottom.

The brush section runs its Spiral Brush Roller units on a slight incline so produce advances as it rotates against the nylon Nylon Brush Bristle Set surfaces. Each Wash-Down Spray Bar flushes loosened dirt away through banks of Flat-Fan Spray Nozzle tips. Shaft Oil Seal units and Ball Bearing pairs protect the roller journals from constant water exposure.

The flume uses a Flume Circulation Pump to push water through Flume Push Jet eductor jets, creating a current that floats produce along the Flume Trough. A Stone / Heavy-Debris Trap collects anything dense enough to sink. At the rinse station, a Rinse Booster Pump boosts fresh water to 2-4 bar, and a Magnetic Flow Meter logs exactly how much is used per batch.

Water treatment and sanitizing

Recirculated water passes through the Water Recirculation & Filtration Skid skid. A Recirculation Pump draws from the Settling / Buffer Tank and sends water through a rotary Rotary Drum Filter whose Wedge-Wire Drum Screen catches organic fines; a Solids Doctor Blade scrapes the caught solids to a waste chute. A Hydrocyclone Grit Separator pulls out sand and grit. A Sanitizer Dosing Pump meters chlorine or peracetic acid into the wash water, and a ORP / Free-Chlorine Sensor reads oxidation-reduction potential so the controller holds sanitizer at the target ppm. Pressure Sensor units across the filters flag when a screen needs cleaning.

Dewatering and drying

The Dewatering & Air-Knife Dryer starts with a Vibrating Dewater Screen driven by eccentric Eccentric Vibration Motor units on Coil Spring isolators; the shaking Perforated Screen Deck drains free water back to the recovery tank. Two Air Knife slots then blow a high-velocity air sheet, fed by a second Regenerative Air Blower, to strip the remaining film. Leafy crops that need very low residual moisture are often diverted to a centrifugal spin dryer instead of the air knife.

Materials and construction

All wetted surfaces use 304 or 316 stainless steel, with food-grade polymers for belts, bristles, and dosing wetted parts. The Frame & Hygiene Base is built from welded square Stainless Frame Tube sections with ground welds, Sheet Metal Panel splash guards, and sealed Hygienic Leveling Foot supports that leave no soil traps. The Control Panel houses a Programmable Logic Controller, an operator Operator HMI Touchscreen, and a bank of Relay and Motor Contactor devices in an IP66 stainless enclosure rated for daily washdown.

Variants and use

Lines are configured around the crop. Root-vegetable lines emphasize the brush section and a robust stone trap, while leafy-green lines lean on flume transport and gentle handling to avoid bruising. Throughput is set by belt width and pump sizing, and a Variable-Frequency Drive on each motor lets the operator tune speeds for different products. These lines are standard equipment in fresh-cut produce plants, frozen-vegetable processors, and central kitchens, where consistent cleaning and verified sanitizer levels are required for food safety records.
