UHT Sterilizer
ProductOverview
The UHT Sterilizer extends the shelf life of liquid dairy by heating product to 135–150 °C for a few seconds, then cooling it quickly. The short time at high temperature kills spoilage and pathogenic organisms while limiting cooked flavour and nutrient loss. Product is pumped at constant flow through staged heat exchangers, held at temperature for a fixed dwell, homogenized aseptically, and cooled, with every stage monitored so the time-temperature curve can be logged for compliance.
Heat exchange
Heating and cooling happen in the Heat Exchanger Section. Cold incoming product first passes through the Heat Recovery Section regenerative plate section, where it is preheated by the hot outgoing product, cutting steam demand. It is then brought to target temperature in Tubular Heater steam-jacketed tubes, and after holding it is dropped in temperature through Plate Cooler plate stacks. Throughout, Pressure Sensor and Thermistor Cartridge sensors track conditions so the controller can hold the sterilization point.
Holding tube
Hitting temperature is not enough; the product must stay there long enough. The Holding Tube provides that dwell. A Holding Coil seamless tube, sized for the flow rate, gives the minimum residence time, wrapped in Holding Insulation to hold temperature along its length, with a redundant Temperature Probe confirming the holding temperature across the full cross-section. The combination of flow rate and tube length is what guarantees sterility.
Homogenization
After sterilization the product passes through the Homogenizer Interface to break fat globules down and stabilize the emulsion. A high-pressure Homogenizer Pump piston pump forces product through the Homogenizing Valve, a two-stage throttling valve that shears the droplets fine, fed by a Flow Distributor manifold. Doing this downstream of sterilization keeps the homogenized product aseptic.
Steam and cooling
Indirect heating needs clean, regulated steam, supplied by the Steam Generation section. A Pressure Regulator holds steam at 3–6 bar across the exchangers, Steam Trap traps return condensate, and Pressure Gauge gauges show supply state. Heat is rejected from the product after holding by the Cooling Loop, where a Cooling Pump circulates chilled fluid from a Cooling Chiller at 2–4 °C, with an Expansion Tank absorbing thermal expansion.
Pumping and flow control
Residence time depends on holding the flow rate steady, which is the job of the Product Pump. A Pump Motor on a variable frequency drive turns a constant-displacement Pump Head rotary lobe or piston unit, sealed by a Pump Seal double mechanical seal with barrier fluid so the product stays uncontaminated. Constant displacement is what ties flow to the holding-tube dwell.
Cleaning and control
Between runs the CIP System cleans the wetted path in place. A CIP Pump circulates detergent from the CIP Tank, with Chemical Injectors dosing alkaline and acid and a Flow Meter confirming circulation. Overseeing the whole system is the Control Module: a safety-rated PLC Unit drives valves and pump speed, the HMI Panel handles recipes and alarms, and the Data Logger records the time-temperature profile for the regulatory audit trail.
