Honing Tool and Abrasive Stones

Assembly

A honing tool finishes the inside of a bore by pressing abrasive stones against its wall while the tool rotates and moves along the bore. In the honing machine example, the tool body locates the stones and their expansion mechanism. The stone shoes carry the abrasives, while separate guide shoes support the tool without doing the same cutting work. The listed return springs belong to this illustrative retracting arrangement.

The abrasive stone is a specification in its own right, not merely a block that fits the holder. Sunnen's stone selection guide distinguishes abrasive type, grit size, bond hardness, and the dimensional series that matches the tool. A replacement with the right outline can still be wrong for the material or finishing operation.

Surface appearance and measured finish are also different questions. Sunnen's honing techniques guide explains that rotation relative to reciprocation changes the crosshatch, while workpiece material and abrasive characteristics affect the resulting finish. A visible crosshatch is therefore not sufficient evidence that the bore meets its drawing.

The six-stone arrangement shown here is one generic configuration, not a universal tool specification. Bore size, material, stock allowance, geometry, and required surface finish must be matched to the manufacturer's tooling and process guidance. The BOM explains what the components do; it does not prescribe a machining recipe.
