Tumble Shot Blast Machine

Product

Overview

A tumble shot blast machine cleans and prepares batches of small parts by throwing steel shot at them while they roll over in a barrel. The parts sit in a tumbling belt barrel, a perforated rubber belt slung between two drums that forms a slow-moving cradle. As the belt turns, the parts climb the rising side and tumble back down, so over a cycle every face of every part is exposed to the shot stream without anyone handling them individually. Above the barrel, a centrifugal blast wheel flings a focused stream of shot down onto the moving load. Everything happens inside a lined blast chamber that contains the shot and the dust.

Spent shot drains through the belt holes and is collected, lifted and cleaned by the shot recovery and recycling loop, then fed back to the wheel. Fine dust and broken media are pulled away by the dust collection unit. Batches are tipped in by a loading skip hopper, and the whole sequence is run from the control panel. The result is a machine that processes castings, forgings, fasteners and stampings in bulk at a few pennies of abrasive cost per kilogram of parts.

How the blast wheel works

The wheel does no air blasting. It is a turbine that converts motor power directly into shot kinetic energy. Recycled shot drops from the feed spout into the centre of a spinning impeller. The impeller throws the shot outward through a window in the fixed control cage, and from there it lands on the throwing blades carried on the bladed runner hub. The blades accelerate the shot along their curved faces and release it in a tight pattern at around 75 m/s.

Aiming is done by rotating the control cage. Because its window is fixed in space while the blades sweep past, turning the cage moves the hot-spot of the blast pattern, and it is set so the densest part of the stream falls on the tumbling parts rather than on the belt or the liners. The wheel drive motor runs at about 2400 rpm and is the single biggest power draw on the machine. Its running current is read by the control as a live measure of how much shot is passing through the wheel, because more shot means more load on the motor.

The recycling loop

Shot is expensive to buy and cheap to reuse, so the machine is built around recovering it. Drained shot falls into the collection hopper under the barrel, where a screw conveyor drags it sideways to the foot of the bucket elevator. The elevator lifts it to the top of the machine and tips it into the airwash separator.

The separator is where the working mix is kept sharp. A controlled crossflow of air blows the cascading shot, carrying off dust, embedded sand and undersize broken media while sound round shot drops straight through. A vibrating screen scalps off any oversize debris, and the cleaned shot collects in the storage hopper. From there a pneumatic shot flow valve meters it back to the wheel and shuts off the moment the wheel stops, so no shot is wasted between cycles.

Materials and wear

Inside the chamber, shot ricochets in every direction at high speed, so wear is the central design problem. The chamber is lined with bolt-in manganese wear liners in Hadfield Mn13 steel, which work-hardens under repeated impact. When a liner wears through it is unbolted and swapped, which protects the cabinet shell itself. The throwing blades are made of chrome-molybdenum white cast iron and are the fastest-wearing parts on the machine; they are changed as a matched set so the runner stays balanced. The endless rubber belt is reinforced nitrile with steel cord, tough enough to tumble heavy castings yet perforated to let shot drain.

The standard abrasive is cast steel shot S330, a rounded medium that peens and cleans without cutting. Where a rougher anchor profile is needed for painting, the same machine runs angular steel grit instead, at the cost of faster liner wear.

Loading, control and safety

Batches are weighed and tipped by the loading skip hopper, so the operator loads a skip at floor level rather than lifting parts into the chamber. A batch weigh sensor reads the load so the cycle time and shot dose can be matched to it. The PLC sequences the steps: tip the batch, close and interlock the access door, start the barrel and the wheel, run for the set time, stop the wheel, brake the barrel and tip the cleaned parts out by reversing the belt.

Safety rests on the door safety interlocks, which cut the wheel motor and brake the barrel before the door can be opened, and on the emergency stops that drop power and the shot feed at once. The HMI screen shows the wheel ammeter and the filter pressure drop, the two numbers that tell an operator whether the wheel is fed and whether the filter cartridges need cleaning.

Variants and use

Tumble blast machines are sized by barrel volume and wheel power, from bench units of a few litres up to floor machines holding several hundred kilograms. Larger plants run two or three wheels on one chamber to shorten the cycle, and continuous versions use a chain of tumbling drums instead of a single barrel. The common jobs are descaling forgings, removing sand and cleaning castings, deburring and deflashing stampings, and peening springs and fasteners. Because the parts are never touched between loading and unloading and the abrasive runs in a closed loop, the machine suits high-volume bulk work where parts are too small or too numerous to fixture one at a time.
