CNC Metal Spinning Machine

Product

Overview

A CNC metal spinning machine forms sheet-metal blanks into seamless hollow parts the same way a manual spinning lathe does, by flowing the spinning metal over a former with a roller, but it drives the roller along a programmed path instead of by hand. That changes what the process can do. A program can run a complex multi- pass profile identically on every part, form thicker and harder metal than a hand spinner could manage, and combine forming, trimming and beading into one automatic cycle. The result is production spinning: seamless cones, hemispheres, gas-cylinder ends, wheel rims, cookware, ducting transitions and pressure-vessel heads made in volume with consistent wall thickness and dimensions. The economics still favour spinning over pressing where runs are moderate, because the only part- specific tooling is the mandrel and the program.

The blank is clamped to the Forming Mandrel by the Hydraulic Tailstock, turned by the Headstock & Spindle, and worked by the CNC Roller Carriage under the CNC Control.

How it works

The Spindle Motor turns the mandrel and blank at a programmed speed through a gearbox that gives torque across the range thick metal needs. The Hydraulic Tailstock clamps the blank flat against the mandrel through the Clamp Cylinder at a force the program sets and a Pressure Sensor confirms. The forming work is done by the CNC Roller Carriage, a two-axis slide that carries the Forming Roller: the Z Axis moves it along the work and the X Axis feeds it in toward the work. By interpolating those two axes the control sweeps the roller along any profile, and it sequences several passes, each one flowing a little more metal down onto the mandrel, the same way a hand spinner builds the form up gradually but without the variation.

Because the roller force is large and continuous, the Bed Casting is heavy and rigid and the Roller Head runs the roller on bearings for continuous duty. A Roller Turret can index between forming, trimming and beading rollers within the cycle so the part comes off finished and trimmed to height.

CNC and motion control

What makes the machine repeatable is that every motion comes from a part program. The CNC Unit interpolates the spindle and the two roller axes together, driving each through a Servo Drive and reading position back from the axis Encoder. A profile is described as roller passes with feeds and depths, and the control runs them identically part after part, holding repeatability to about five hundredths of a millimetre. Programs are loaded and tuned at the Operator Panel, where the operator can also jog the axes and step through a new program before committing it to a run. The same program library lets a shop re-run a part months later without re-deriving the roller path by hand.

Hydraulics and coolant

The high clamp force and any roller assist come from the Hydraulic Power Pack: a motor-driven Hydraulic Pump feeds a Valve Block that drives the tailstock cylinder, and a Accumulator holds the clamp pressure steady through the cycle. Forming thick metal at production rates makes real friction heat, so the Coolant & Lubrication floods the roller-to-work contact with coolant-lubricant through the Coolant Nozzle jets, carrying off the heat and letting the roller flow the metal without galling. The returning fluid is filtered before it is used again.

Materials and construction

The Mandrel Body is hardened tool steel because it must survive thousands of parts without losing its profile, and the Main Spindle runs on angular- contact bearings sized for the heavy radial roller load. Mild and stainless steel, aluminium, copper and titanium all spin on a powered machine; the CNC roller force and rigid bed let it work much thicker stock than a hand lathe, into several millimetres of steel. The bed and slides are built stiff so the programmed roller path is the path the metal actually sees, which is what keeps wall thickness and diameter consistent across a run.

Use and variants

A typical job is spinning the dished end of an LPG or air-receiver cylinder from a flat steel blank: clamp the blank, run the multi-pass forming program to flow it into the mandrel's dome, then index the turret to trim the rim and roll the weld-prep edge, all in one cycle. This two-axis machine flows metal at constant thickness; shear-forming and flow-forming machines on the same platform deliberately thin the wall to a programmed taper for tubes and rocket-motor cases, and multi-roller machines balance the forming force with opposed rollers for large parts. Across the family the principle is the same as hand spinning, a roller flowing a spinning blank over a former, with the roller path now driven by program for repeatable production.

Control and safety

The CNC Control drives the spindle and roller axes from the part program and shows status on the operator panel. The Enclosure & Guards fully contains coolant and swarf and guards the powered forming zone, the Interlock Switch halts the cycle when a guard opens, and the Emergency Stop stops the spindle and axes at once.
