Continuous Belt Furnace
ProductOverview
A continuous belt furnace heat-treats a steady stream of parts by carrying them on a moving wire belt through heating, soaking, and cooling zones laid out in a line. Parts are placed on the Load Table at one end, the belt pulls them through the heated Heating Chamber at a set speed, and they come off cooled at the Unload Table. Because the belt never stops, every part follows the same path at the same speed and so receives the same heat treatment. This makes the furnace well suited to high-volume runs of small to medium parts: fasteners, stampings, springs, chains, blades, powder-metal compacts, and brazed assemblies. The time a part spends at temperature is set by belt speed rather than by a timer on a batch, so output is continuous and predictable.
The machine has seven main systems. The Heating Chamber holds the heat, the Belt System moves the parts, the Heating System raises the temperature, the Atmosphere System protects the parts from oxidation, the Cooling Zone brings them back down, the Control System runs the recipe, and the Frame and Tables carries it all at working height.
The heating chamber
The Heating Chamber is a long insulated tunnel. At its core is the Muffle, a heat-resistant alloy tube that separates the parts and their atmosphere from the heating elements, so the elements heat the muffle and the muffle radiates evenly to the load. Around the muffle sits a Refractory Brick lining backed by a Ceramic Fiber Blanket, a layered insulation that keeps the outer Outer Shell cool and holds the chamber near setpoint with modest power. The belt rides on Hearth Plate sections that support it across the hot span and resist sagging. At the inlet and outlet, End Curtain flaps hang down over the belt openings to trap the atmosphere and slow the loss of heat and gas.
Belt and drive
The Belt System is what makes the furnace continuous. The Mesh Belt is a woven wire belt of heat-resistant alloy that flexes around the drums while holding parts flat. It is pulled by the Drive Drum, a sprocketed head drum that engages the mesh, and looped back over the free Idler Drum at the tail. Because the belt grows when hot, the Belt Tensioner uses a Take-up Screw and Coil Spring to keep it taut through the thermal cycle. Speed comes from the Drive Motor, an inverter-fed motor through a Gearbox Housing and Helical Gear Pair to a Drive Chain on the drum. Setting that speed sets the soak time, the single most important process variable. The belt rides flat on Belt Support Rail sections so parts do not tip.
Heating and atmosphere
The Heating System system uses banks of Heating Element resistance elements carried on Element Holder supports and fed through Bus Bar copper. The chamber is split into several zones, each driven by its own SCR Controller and read by a Zone Thermocouple, so the leading zones can ramp parts up while the soak zone holds them steady. The Atmosphere System system protects the work from scaling and decarburization. Gases blend in the Gas Manifold, metered by Flow Meter units and Gas Valve solenoids, and a Recirculation Fan stirs the chamber for even contact. A Pressure Sensor keeps the chamber slightly above ambient so air does not leak in, and Burn-off Port flames at the openings ignite the gas as it escapes.
Cooling and quench
Past the hot zone, the Cooling Zone system brings parts down at a controlled rate. The belt passes through a Cooling Jacket, a water-cooled tunnel fed by the Water Pump and a Heat Exchanger, with Cooling Blower blowers to speed the drop. For hardenable steels the belt can dip into a Quench Tank, where the Quench Vessel holds oil stirred by a Quench Agitator and held in range by a Quench Cooler, so parts harden as they exit. The O-Ring Set seals keep the water jacket tight.
Control, frame, and variants
The Control System system uses an Microcontroller on a Bare PCB board with SMD Passive (R/C/L), a HMI Panel and LCD Panel for the operator, Relay outputs, and a Power Supply for the logic, wired through Wire Bundle and Connector terminals. It holds every zone at setpoint and stores recipes by part. The Frame and Tables is a Base Frame with Sheet Metal Panel covers, Leveling Foot feet, and the load and unload tables. Variants range from small bench units for jewelry and electronics to long production lines for fasteners. The limits are clear: the mesh belt sets an upper temperature near 1150 degrees and a load weight the wire can carry, and parts must sit stable on a belt, so very large or very heavy workpieces go to batch furnaces instead. Within those bounds the belt furnace is the standard tool for treating parts by the thousand at a steady, repeatable quality.
