Radial Drill Press Product

Overview

A radial drill press solves the problem of drilling large, heavy workpieces: rather than moving a multi-tonne casting under a fixed spindle, the machine moves its spindle over the work. The Drill Head slides along a cantilevered Radial Arm that swings a full circle around the Column Assembly and rides up and down it under power. Three motions — arm swing, arm height, head traverse — put the spindle anywhere inside a cylindrical working envelope roughly 3 m across, while the workpiece stays clamped to the Base Plate or Box Table.

Machines of this class drill and tap holes from about 12 mm up to 80 mm in weldments, machine bases, valve bodies, and structural steel. The configuration dates to the mid-19th century and remains standard in fabrication shops and heavy machine assembly, where CNC machining centres are uneconomic for one-off hole work on large parts.

Structure

The column is two concentric members. The Inner Column is a ground steel pillar bolted to the base; the Outer Column rotates around it on large Column Slew Bearing taper roller bearings that resist the overturning moment of the extended arm — with the head at full 1.6 m reach, drilling thrust of 25 kN puts a 40 kN·m moment into the column. The Arm Casting is a box-section beam clamped to the outer column; its front face carries hardened Arm Guideways and a Traverse Rack along which the head saddle moves via the Traverse Pinion.

Arm height is set by the Arm Elevation Drive: a reversing Elevation Motor at the column top turns the Elevating Screw through a Helical Gear Pair, driving the bronze Elevating Nut fixed to the arm sleeve. A trailing safety nut runs unloaded just behind it and catches the arm if the working thread ever strips. Pressing the elevation button automatically releases the Arm Clamp, moves the arm, and reclamps — Elevation Limit Switch contacts stop travel at the extremes. Before cutting, the operator locks all three positioning freedoms: the Column Clamp, the arm clamp, and the Head Clamp, usually from one hydraulic circuit. An unclamped radial drill flexes visibly under thrust and walks the drill point.

Head, spindle, and feed

The Head Casting packages the entire machining capability. On top, the Spindle Motor drives the Speed Gearbox, a sliding-gear transmission whose lever-shifted clusters on splined Gearbox Shaft members give sixteen speeds from 25 to 2,000 rpm — a 50 mm drill in steel runs near the bottom of that range at around 150 rpm, a small spotting drill near the top.

The Drilling Spindle has a Morse taper 5 socket and runs in the Quill, a non-rotating ground sleeve. Feed is applied to the quill: the Feed Mechanism taps drive off the spindle itself, so feed is geared per revolution (0.04-1.6 mm/rev through the Feed Gearbox) rather than per minute, and a pinion engages the Quill Rack to push the drill down. The Feed Overload Clutch slips if thrust spikes — a dull drill or a breakthrough grab — protecting the train, and the Depth Stop Dial trips feed out at preset depth for blind holes. The operator can override with the Feed Handwheel capstan lever, which is also how tapping is done: power tap in, reverse the spindle from the Head Control Station, and back the tap out. A Coil Spring counterbalances the quill so it does not drop under its own weight, and tools are ejected with a drift through the Drift Slot.

Workholding and services

Work clamps to T-slots in the base or the box table using the T-Slot Clamp Kit; the largest weldments are simply levelled on the floor plate beside the base, the arm swung out over them — the reason Foundation Bolt anchoring matters. Coolant is a simple recirculating system: a Coolant Pump in the base-cast Coolant Tank feeds the Coolant Nozzle at the head, with a mesh strainer keeping chips out of the return.

Electrics live in the column-mounted Starter Panel with the contactors and overloads; the moving head is fed through the looped Pendant Cable, and a Power Supply runs the 24 V control circuit and Relay logic. Operating practice is unchanged in a century: position, clamp, select speed and feed for the diameter, drill. What the machine offers over any portable alternative is rigidity — true, round, straight holes at 50 mm diameter — combined with a reach no fixed-table machine can match.
