Overview

A CNC router is a gantry machine that drives a high-speed spindle over a flat bed to cut sheet and plate material to a programmed path. Where a CNC mill is built for heavy cuts in metal on a small footprint, a router trades rigidity for reach: a wide, shallow envelope that suits full sheets of plywood, MDF, acrylic, foam and thin aluminium. The cutter spins fast and feeds fast, and the Vacuum Hold-Down clamps the stock flat so no fixtures clutter the path.

The machine stands on a welded Frame & Gantry, whose bridge gantry spans the Bed & Spoilboard. The bed is an aluminium vacuum table faced with a sacrificial Spoilboard the machine surfaces flat, so the cutter can break through the stock without damaging the table. Three servo axes move the tool: the X-Axis Drive traverses the gantry down the bed, the Y-Axis Drive carries the saddle across the beam, and the Z-Axis Drive sets cut depth. Each axis is an AC servo turning a ball screw on profiled linear guides, giving repeatable position to a few hundredths of a millimetre.

How it works

Cutting happens at the Router Spindle, an air-cooled motor spinning an ER collet up to 24,000 rpm. At that speed an end mill or router bit shears wood and plastic cleanly; the Dust Shoe floats around the cutter and pulls the chips straight into the shop extractor. For aluminium the Mist Lubrication atomises a trace of lubricant onto the edge to clear heat and built-up chips.

The brain sits in the CNC Control Cabinet cabinet. A Motion Controller reads the G-code program, plans the toolpath, and streams coordinated commands to three Servo Drive amplifiers, while a Spindle VFD sets the spindle rpm. The operator loads stock, opens the vacuum zones under it, sets the tool and zeroes the axes from the Operator Pendant, then runs the job. The controller closes the loop on each axis through its encoder, so the cut follows the programmed path even as the gantry accelerates and reverses thousands of times across a nested sheet.
