Universal Milling Machine

Product

Overview

A universal milling machine is a horizontal mill whose worktable can swivel about a vertical axis. That single feature, the swivel, is what makes it universal: by setting the table at an angle and gearing the Dividing Head to the table lead screw, the machine can cut helical flutes, spiral gears, and worms that a plain horizontal mill cannot. For ordinary work it behaves like any other horizontal mill, driving a cutter on an arbor across a part clamped to the table, but the angled table opens up a class of geometry that defined the machine's name when it was introduced in the nineteenth century.

The structure starts with the Base & Column, a heavy iron casting that houses the spindle gear train and carries the vertical ways for the knee. A Horizontal Spindle Drive drives the cutter, an Overarm & Arbor Support steadies the far end of the Cutter Arbor, and the work rides a stack of slides: the Knee & Elevation, the Cross Saddle, and the Swiveling Worktable.

Spindle drive and arbor

The Horizontal Spindle Drive is a geared head rather than a belt drive. A Spindle Motor feeds a Speed Gearbox whose Shift Forks slide gear clusters to select one of many discrete speeds, giving the high torque at low speed that heavy horizontal cuts demand. The Spindle Shaft runs on a preloaded Ball Bearing set and ends in an ISO 40 Spindle Nose Taper.

Cutters mount on a Cutter Arbor that pulls into the spindle taper with a Drawbar. Several cutters can be stacked along the Arbor Shaft, positioned by ground Arbor Spacers and clamped with an Arbor Nut. This gang-milling capability lets one pass cut several surfaces at once. Because the arbor is long and the cutting forces are high, the Overarm & Arbor Support slides out over the work and drops an Arbor Support Yoke onto the arbor's outer end, with an Arbor Brace tying it back to the knee to kill deflection.

The swiveling table

The Swiveling Worktable is the heart of the machine. The Table Casting sits on a graduated Swivel Base that rotates about a vertical axis and locks with Swivel Clamps. When the table is swung to an angle and the work is turned slowly by the dividing head as the table advances, the cutter traces a helix. The amount of swivel equals the helix angle, and the rate of turn relative to table travel sets the lead. The table itself feeds on a Table Lead Screw through handwheels at both ends, riding on the Cross Saddle below it for cross travel.

Dividing head and indexing

The Dividing Head is the second half of the universal capability. A Worm & Wheel gives a 40:1 ratio, so forty turns of the Index Crank make one turn of the Dividing Head Spindle. By turning the crank a counted number of holes on the Index Plate, the operator indexes the work into any whole number of equal divisions, the basis of cutting gear teeth, splines, and bolt circles. For helical work, a train of Change Gears couples the table lead screw to the dividing head so the work rotates continuously as the table feeds.

Feeds, lubrication, and control

A Feed Gearbox supplies power feed to all three axes. Its Feed Motor drives a Feed Drive Shaft through selectable gears, and Feed Clutches route the drive to whichever axis is in use. Steady, repeatable feed matters for surface finish on long horizontal cuts. The Lubrication System system pushes oil through metering units to every slideway and screw, and the Electrical Control cabinet holds the motor starters, interlocks, and a Pushbutton Pendant for start, stop, and jog. A Coolant System system floods the cutter to clear chips and hold edge temperature down.

Materials and use

All major structures are stress-relieved gray iron with hand-scraped, oil-grooved ways. Spindle and arbor are hardened alloy steel; gears in the speed and feed boxes are case-hardened and ground. Bearings in the spindle and feed train are preloaded so that backlash and end float stay small over years of use, since slop anywhere in the drive shows up as poor finish or inaccurate gear teeth. The worm and wheel in the dividing head are lapped as a matched set, because the indexing accuracy of the whole machine rests on that single pair.

The universal mill suits tool rooms, gear shops, and jobbing work where helical and indexed features are needed alongside ordinary slab, slot, and form milling. Typical jobs include cutting spur and helical gears, milling reamer and cutter flutes, forming cams, machining splines, and dividing bolt circles and graduated scales. Common cutters are slab mills, side-and-face cutters, slitting saws, form cutters, and involute gear cutters, several of which can be ganged on one arbor to finish a part in a single pass. With a vertical head attachment the machine doubles as a vertical mill, and with a slotting attachment it cuts internal keyways, which is why a single universal machine often anchors a small shop that cannot justify separate gear-cutting and milling machines.
