Turret Milling Machine

Product

Overview

A turret milling machine is the general-purpose mill found in nearly every tool room and prototype shop. It removes metal by feeding a workpiece against a rotating multi-tooth cutter, and its layout makes it adaptable rather than fast: the spindle head sits on a swiveling turret and a sliding ram, so the cutter can be positioned almost anywhere over the table and tilted to almost any angle. One machine can drill, bore, face, slot, and cut angled features without moving the part to another tool. This versatility, and the easy hand control of every axis, is why the layout has stayed in production for decades.

The machine is built up from a heavy Base & Column. The cast base and column damp cutting vibration and carry the hand-scraped dovetail ways that the rest of the machine inherits its geometry from. On top sits the Turret & Ram, and hanging off its ram is the Vertical Spindle Head that does the cutting. The work is carried on a stack of three slides, the Knee & Elevation, the Cross-Slide Saddle, and the Worktable, that give the Z, Y, and X travels.

The spindle head

The Vertical Spindle Head is the part that defines the machine. A Head Motor drives a Variable-Speed Drive, a variable-pitch sheave system that changes spindle speed steplessly by moving the two halves of a split pulley closer or farther apart while a Drive Belt rides between them. This lets the operator dial in any speed from a slow boring rate to a fast cut in aluminum without stopping to swap gears.

Below the drive is the Milling Spindle, a hardened Spindle Shaft running in a preloaded set of angular-contact Ball Bearings and ending in an R8 Spindle Taper. The R8 taper is self-releasing and a Drawbar pulls the collet or tool holder up into it. The spindle lives inside a Quill, a sliding sleeve fed down by the Quill Feed Mechanism for drilling and boring, with a Micrometer Depth Stop to set plunge depth. The whole head bolts to the ram through a Nod Trunnion so it can tilt fore and aft.

Turret, ram, and reach

The Turret & Ram is what separates this mill from a fixed-head machine. The Turret Casting is graduated through 360 degrees and can be swiveled and clamped, while the Sliding Ram slides in and out on its own dovetail driven by a Ram Pinion & Rack. Together they let the operator put the spindle over the front, back, or side of a large part that could not be reached on a fixed column. After positioning, the turret and ram are locked solid so cutting forces cannot shift them.

The slide stack

Workpiece motion comes from three nested slides. The Knee & Elevation rides the column ways and is raised or lowered on an Elevation Screw to set rough height and Z depth. On the knee sits the Cross-Slide Saddle, moved toward and away from the column by a Cross-Feed Screw through a split Cross-Feed Nut that takes out backlash. The Worktable sits on the saddle and provides the long X travel, with a graduated Table Handwheel at each end and adjustable Trip Dogs to trip the feed at the ends of travel. Tapered Knee Gibs and saddle gibs take up wear so the slides stay tight.

Feeds, lubrication, and readout

A Table Power Feed hangs on the end of the table. Its Feed Motor drives the lead screw through a small gearbox and a Feed Clutch that the trip dogs disengage automatically, giving a steady mechanical feed for finishing cuts. Every slideway and screw is kept oiled by the One-Shot Lubrication system: one stroke of the Lube Hand Pump doses metered oil through a manifold of Metering Units to all the friction surfaces at once.

Modern machines add a Control & DRO cabinet with a DRO Display that reads three Glass Linear Scales and shows true axis position to five microns, so the operator works to a number rather than counting handwheel turns. A Flood Coolant System system floods the cutter, cools the edge, and washes chips down into the base trough.

Use and materials

The castings are stress-relieved gray iron for damping and dimensional stability. Ways are hand-scraped and oil-grooved; screws are rolled Acme or ground ball screws on better machines. A turret mill suits tool and die work, fixture making, short production runs, and the kind of one-off jobs where setup flexibility matters more than cycle time. Common accessories include a precision vise, a rotary table, a dividing head, and boring heads that exploit the quill feed for accurate hole work.
