Industrial Parts Washer

Product

Overview

An industrial parts washer cleans machined components, castings, and assemblies by flooding them with a hot aqueous detergent solution and then rinsing and drying them. This machine is the rotary-basket spray type: parts sit in a perforated Load Basket on a Rotary Turntable that turns slowly inside a sealed Wash Cabinet while a fixed Spray Manifold hits every face of the load. It replaces solvent degreasing for most shop work because water-based chemistry is cheaper to run, safer for operators, and easier to permit. A typical machine takes a 300 kg load, holds 200 L of solution at 50-80 C, and runs a full wash, rinse, and dry cycle in 6 to 20 minutes depending on how dirty the parts are.

How it works

The operator loads the basket, closes the door, and starts a recipe on the control panel. The Door Interlock Switch confirms the door is shut before any spray can run. The Wash Pump draws heated solution from the Wash Solution Tank through a suction strainer and pushes it at 4-6 bar to the spray manifold, where roughly two dozen flat-fan nozzles break the flow into fans that strip oil and chips off the parts. The turntable rotates at 2-6 rpm so the spray reaches shadowed surfaces. Spent solution drains back through the sump to the tank and recirculates, so a single charge of water cleans many loads before it is dumped.

When the wash timer ends, the pump stops and the Rinse System takes over: a smaller pump sends fresh or lightly used rinse water through its own manifold to flush detergent residue off the parts, which matters when the parts go on to painting or assembly. The rinse stage then stops and the Blow-Off Dryer runs, pushing hot air through air knives that sheet the water off the load so parts come out dry and ready to handle.

Tank and heating

The Wash Solution Tank is an insulated stainless sump holding about 200 L. Two immersion Heating Element heaters bring the solution up to the setpoint and hold it there; a PT100 probe feeds the controller, which switches the heaters through contactors. A float level switch protects the heaters from running dry, and a conductivity sensor on the Detergent Doser watches detergent strength so a peristaltic pump can top up concentrate to keep the bath in the 2-5 % working range. Holding temperature is what makes aqueous cleaning work: warm alkaline solution lifts oil far faster than cold water, and most detergents are formulated for a 55-70 C band.

Filtration and oil separation

Oil and swarf are the enemies of bath life. The Filtration & Oil Separation block keeps the solution usable for weeks instead of days. A belt Oil Skimmer continuously lifts floating tramp oil off the tank surface, an oleophilic belt that drags oil to a scraper and a waste trough. A bag filter catches coarse chips down to about 50 microns and a pleated cartridge polishes the flow to roughly 10 microns before it returns to the pump. For shops cutting with emulsifying coolants, a plate-pack coalescer separates finely dispersed oil that a skimmer alone would miss. Good filtration also protects the pump seals and keeps the nozzles from clogging.

Materials

Everything wetted is 304 or 316 stainless: the cabinet, the tank, the manifold pipe, the impeller, and the basket. Aqueous detergents are alkaline and corrosive to mild steel and aluminium over time, so stainless and corrosion-resistant plastics are used throughout. Seals are silicone or EPDM rather than nitrile, since nitrile swells in hot alkaline service. The pump runs a carbon-on-ceramic Mechanical Seal that tolerates the abrasive grit carried in the solution better than a lip seal would.

Variants

Top-loading cabinet washers like this one suit batches of small to medium parts. Front-loading versions trade some sealing for easier loading of heavy single parts on a roller deck. Conveyor and monorail washers run parts through wash, rinse, and dry tunnels back to back for high volume, with the same pump, manifold, and tank subsystems repeated per zone. Immersion-agitation washers lower the basket into an ultrasonic or turbulated bath instead of spraying, which cleans blind holes and complex internal passages that spray cannot reach. Solvent and vapor-degreasing machines use the same cabinet and condenser ideas but a sealed solvent loop.

Vapor extraction

Hot spray makes steam, and steam carries detergent and oil mist that would fog the shop and corrode the ceiling if it escaped. The Vapor Extraction system pulls air from the cabinet through a mist eliminator and a water-cooled condenser, which knocks the vapour back to liquid and returns it to the tank, so the machine loses little water and vents mostly clean air. An exhaust fan maintains slight negative pressure inside the cabinet so vapour does not puff out when the door opens.

Control system

The Control System panel runs the whole sequence. A PLC reads the level, temperature, pressure, and door inputs and drives the heaters, pumps, valves, and blower through contactors and a VFD that ramps the turntable and wash pump. The operator picks a recipe on the touch HMI, which stores wash time, temperature, and dry time per part family. An emergency stop drops all motor power, and the door interlock and low-level cutout are wired so the machine cannot spray with the door open or heat with the tank empty.

Maintenance and failure modes

The common failures are predictable. Nozzles clog with scale and chips, which drops spray coverage and leaves dirty parts, so they are checked and cleared on a schedule. The wash-pump mechanical seal wears against grit and starts to weep, which is the usual reason a pump comes off for service. Heating elements scale up in hard-water areas and eventually burn out. The skimmer belt glazes over and stops picking up oil, letting the bath load up with emulsion. Filters blind off and must be changed before flow falls. Catching these early keeps the bath clean and the cycle time short.

Installation

The machine needs a level floor, a 400 V three-phase supply sized for the 14 kW connected load, a water feed for rinse top-up, and a floor drain for periodic dumps of spent solution. The vapour condenser needs cooling water or it is fitted with a small chiller. Local rules usually require the spent bath to be treated or hauled as oily wastewater rather than poured to drain, so a tank for collected waste oil and a connection for a waste hauler are planned into the installation.
