Recycling Baler Product

Overview

A recycling baler is a horizontal hydraulic compactor designed to consolidate and bind loose recycled materials (cardboard, paper, plastics, textiles, aluminum) into standardized dense bales for efficient storage, handling, and transport. The machine uses a powered ram delivering 150 kN of force to compress material in a chamber, then automatically binds the finished bale with cross-wound wire and ejects it onto a conveyor or collection area. Cycle times of 60–90 seconds allow processing 6–10 bales per hour, dramatically reducing the volume and weight of incoming recyclables.

Recycling balers are installed at material recovery facilities (MRFs), waste transfer stations, large retail distribution centers, and manufacturing plants with significant cardboard and plastic streams. The economic benefit is substantial: compacting 40–50 loose cubic meters of cardboard into 4–5 dense bales reduces hauling trips and disposal costs, while the bales are more stackable and transportable to secondary processors.

How it works

Compression Cycle

The operator loads loose material through the large feed hopper. A powered pusher ram activated by the operator forces material into the compression chamber. The chamber has a fixed floor and walls but a moving left wall driven by a 6 bar pneumatic cylinder; the right wall is fixed.

Once the chamber is charged with material, the operator presses the start button on the Control Enclosure. The control logic energizes the proportional directional valve solenoid, routing pressurized hydraulic fluid from the variable pump to the head-end port of the main cylinder. The ram plate descends, compressing material against the chamber floor.

Pressure rises as material is crushed. A Pressure Sensor monitoring the chamber sends feedback to the control system; when target pressure is reached (typically 220 bar), the valve shifts to a holding position, maintaining pressure while the timer counts. After 30–45 seconds, the operator or automatic sequence deenergizes the solenoid. The valve reverses, directing flow to the rod-end side of the cylinder. The ram retracts upward as the Accumulator releases stored energy, accelerating retraction.

As the ram fully retracts, the ejection slide lowers on its springs, and the finished bale is pushed by the retracting ram onto a collection table or roller conveyor. The cycle is now complete and ready for fresh material.

Wire Tying System

After each bale ejects, the wire tier assembly automatically engages. The wire is stored on a motorized spool drive, turning at 36 rpm via a 50:1 gear reduction. As the spool rotates, wire unwinds through hard-chrome guide eyelets, passing around the ejected bale in a cross pattern.

A pneumatic knotter with dual needle guides threads and cinches the wire around the bale, tying a knot in approximately 0.5 s. The operator can program 4–6 wire ties per bale through the HMI display. Once all ties are complete, a solenoid-actuated wire cutter shears the supply wire cleanly. The knotter retracts, and the next cycle can begin.

Hydraulic Power Path

The 30 kW electric motor drives the variable displacement vane pump at 1800 rpm. The pump is equipped with a load-sensing compensator that reduces flow when no compression is active, saving energy during idle periods and heating. The pump is rated 25 cc/rev at 1800 rpm, yielding a theoretical 45 liters/minute output.

Pressurized fluid flows into the NG16 cavity manifold block, which houses:

 • The proportional directional control valve, a load-sensing 4/3 spool with 24 VDC proportional solenoid.
 • Integrated check valves preventing backflow.
 • Pilot-operated main relief valve set at 250 bar, protecting all downstream components.
 • Instrumentation ports for pressure transducers.

Return flow from the cylinder rod-end and all control leaks drain back to the reservoir (200 L capacity) through integral manifold passages. A 3 L accumulator (nitrile bladder, 250 bar rated) stores energy during compression, releasing it to accelerate ram retraction without the pump alone supplying sufficient flow.

Control and Safety

The control enclosure houses a 7 inch touchscreen HMI displaying cycle count, hydraulic pressure, wire tie count, and diagnostic codes. An emergency stop button (red 40 mm mushroom head) breaks the circuit to the proportional solenoid and motor contactor, stopping the machine immediately.

A soft starter limits inrush current when the motor starts, reducing electrical stress on the facility power system. The motor is protected by overload relay in the three-phase contactor.

Feed-gate interlocks prevent the machine from operating if the safety gate is open. Dual-channel safety interlocks are SIL-rated to prevent hazardous motion if an operator reaches into the compression chamber.

Materials Processed

 • Cardboard and paperboard: Achieve 300–400 kg/m³ density, typical 85 kg finished bale weight.
 • Office paper and newsprint: Lighter material, density 150–250 kg/m³, 30–50 kg bale.
 • Plastic film (LDPE, LLDPE): Sticky when compressed; bales can reach 500+ kg/m³ density.
 • PET and HDPE containers: Hard plastic, density 350–450 kg/m³.
 • Aluminum cans and foil: Cross-wired tying prevents deformation during stacking.
 • Mixed fiber and textile: Density 250–350 kg/m³, often requiring wider wire spacing.

Maintenance

Daily tasks include visual inspection of all fasteners, checking the hydraulic fluid level, and testing the emergency stop button.

Weekly maintenance includes draining condensation from the accumulator, visually inspecting the ram plate and chamber walls for wear, and testing the feed-gate interlocks. The wire cutter blade should be inspected for nicks and replaced if cuts become ragged (every 500–1000 bales or 2–3 weeks typical use).

Monthly tasks include changing the hydraulic return-filter element, topping up seals on the main cylinder rod if weeping is observed, and inspecting the vibration isolators for cracks or hardening.

The proportional valve solenoid coils should be tested monthly for proper deenergization response time (<100 ms). Hydraulic fluid should be sampled annually for viscosity and contamination; full change-out is recommended every 1500–2000 operating hours.

The motor and V-belt should be checked monthly for proper tension and wear. The soft starter ramp time should be confirmed quarterly (nominally 10 s acceleration).
