Plastic Washing Line

Product

Overview

A plastic washing line takes dirty shredded flake and turns it into clean, dry material ready for pelletizing or direct reprocessing. Post-consumer plastic arrives coated with dirt, food residue, glue, labels, and grit, and a recycler cannot make good pellets from it until that contamination is gone. The line runs the flake through a sequence of stages: the Infeed Unit meters it in, the Pre-Wash Drum drum knocks off loose dirt, the Friction Washer scrubs the stubborn film, the Sink-Float Tank tank sorts plastics by density, and the Dryer removes the water. A Water Treatment loop keeps the process water clean, while the Control System system coordinates everything and the Frame and Platforms holds the stages at working height.

Washing is what separates real recycling from simple grinding. A clean flake stream commands a far higher price and makes pellets that can go back into demanding products like bottles and pipe, so the washing line is usually the most water and energy intensive part of a recycling plant.

Metered infeed

Even washing depends on a steady, even feed, which the Infeed Unit provides. Flake collects in a Feed Hopper, a Screw Feeder meters it at a set rate, and a Belt Conveyor lifts it to the first wash stage. The conveyor is a cleated Conveyor Belt over Belt Roller units driven by a Belt Motor. A Metal Detector watches the stream so tramp metal can be diverted before it reaches and damages the high-speed washers. Holding the feed rate constant matters because each downstream stage is tuned for a given loading, and surges either overload a washer or leave it half empty.

Pre-wash and friction washing

The first cleaning happens in the Pre-Wash Drum drum, a rotating perforated Drum Shell fitted with Drum Lifter vanes that tumble the flake while Spray Bar nozzles rinse it. Loose dirt, sand, and small stones drain out through the perforations, carried by water that the drum motor keeps circulating. What the pre-wash cannot remove, the Friction Washer takes off by force: a high-speed Friction Screw throws the flake hard against a perforated Friction Tube, and the flake scrubbing against itself and the wall strips off glue, ink, and clinging organic residue. The dirty water and fine debris escape through the tube while the cleaned flake advances. For sticky contamination, this stage may run with warm water and a little caustic.

Density separation

Mixed flake often contains more than one polymer, and the Sink-Float Tank tank sorts them by density. In the Separation Tank, polyolefins such as PP and HDPE float because they are lighter than water, while PET, PVC, and any remaining grit sink. A Skimmer Paddle sweeps the floating fraction to one outfeed, a Sink Auger drags the sunk fraction out of the bottom, and Agitator Paddle paddles keep the flake moving so trapped air bubbles release and the separation stays clean. This stage is what lets a line that shreds mixed bottles deliver a clean polyolefin cap stream separate from the PET body stream, since the two cannot be melted together.

Drying

Wet flake cannot be pelletized, so the Dryer removes the water in two steps. A centrifugal Centrifuge Rotor spins the flake against a Centrifuge Screen, flinging off most of the surface water mechanically. What remains is driven off by a Hot Air Blower that pushes air warmed by Heating Element units through the flake until it reaches the low moisture a downstream extruder needs. Good drying matters most for PET, where residual moisture causes the polymer to break down during melting.

Water treatment and control

The line would consume vast amounts of fresh water if it ran once-through, so the Water Treatment loop recirculates it. Dirty water flows to a Settling Tank where grit and sludge drop out, a Vibrating Sieve pulls fine plastic fragments from the stream, a Sludge Filter dewaters the collected sludge, and Recirculation Pump units return clarified water to the washers. Over the whole line the Control System system sequences the stages, holds tank levels, and sets washer speeds through Drive Inverter inverters from the Line HMI, where operators select recipes for different feedstocks.

Materials and use

Washing lines are configured around the feedstock. A PET bottle line emphasizes hot caustic washing and thorough drying to strip glue and prepare food-grade flake, while an HDPE or PP line focuses on density separation and label removal. Film washing lines add extra friction and squeezing stages because thin film traps dirt and water stubbornly. The line sits between shredding and pelletizing in the plant: shredders and granulators make the flake, the washing line cleans and sorts it, and a pelletizer turns the clean flake back into salable resin. The main running costs are water, heat for drying, and the energy of the high-speed washers, which is why water recirculation and efficient drying are central to the design.
