Ladle Refining Furnace

Product

Overview

A ladle refining furnace, often called an LRF, is a secondary steelmaking station that takes raw molten steel and brings it to the exact temperature and chemistry a continuous caster needs. The primary furnace, usually an electric arc furnace or a basic oxygen converter, makes steel quickly but roughly. The LRF then fine-tunes it: it reheats the melt to hold temperature against losses, stirs it to make it uniform, removes dissolved oxygen and sulphur, and adds alloys to a tight target. The work happens in the ladle itself rather than in a separate vessel. A Water-Cooled Roof lowers onto the Steel Ladle, three electrodes from the Electrode System strike arcs to heat the steel, the Argon Stirring System system mixes it from below, the Alloy and Wire Feed adjusts chemistry, and the Fume Extraction system captures the smoke, all driven by the Process Control.

The ladle

The Steel Ladle is the working vessel. A welded Ladle Shell holds two refractory layers: a Working Lining in direct contact with steel and slag, which wears with every heat, and a Safety Lining behind it that contains the melt if the working lining thins through. The ladle pours through a Slide Gate in its floor, where two Gate Plate plates slide across a Inner Nozzle driven by a Gate Cylinder to meter steel into the caster. Set into the floor are Porous Plug plugs for stirring gas, and Trunnion lugs let the crane lift and tilt the full ladle.

Heating with the arc

Heat comes from three graphite arcs, the same principle as an electric arc furnace but smaller and gentler. The Electrode System holds three Graphite Electrode columns, each gripped by a Electrode Clamp on an Electrode Arm that rides a Lifting Mast. Current reaches the arms through water-cooled Bus Tube tubes. The arcs strike between the electrode tips and the steel through a layer of slag, which buries the arc so its heat goes into the metal rather than the lining. The electrodes are lowered through ports in the Water-Cooled Roof, whose Electrode Port collars and central Refractory Delta take the radiant heat, and the Roof Lift swings the cover clear for ladle exchange.

Power supply

The arcs draw very high current at low voltage, which the Furnace Transformer provides. Plant voltage enters its HV Winding windings around the Transformer Core, and the LV Winding windings deliver thousands of amps to the electrodes. An on-load Tap Changer selects arc voltage without breaking power, so the operator can trade heating rate against arc stability as the slag changes. The windings sit in oil in the Oil Tank, cooled by the Transformer Cooler. Because an LRF mostly holds temperature rather than melting cold scrap, its transformer is smaller than an arc furnace transformer of the same heat size.

Stirring and alloy additions

Even chemistry and temperature depend on stirring. The Argon Stirring System system meters argon through the Argon Panel and its Flow Valve valves into the Porous Plug plugs, and a bubbling column rises through the melt to mix it. A Stirring Lance gives extra stirring from the top when needed. The stir does more than mix: it floats non-metallic inclusions up into the slag where they are removed, which is the main cleanliness step. With the melt stirring, the Alloy and Wire Feed adjusts chemistry. Ferroalloys are drawn from Alloy Bin bins by Vibratory Feeder feeders into a Weigh Hopper that doses by weight, then dropped through the Addition Chute. Reactive elements like calcium are added as cored wire by a Wire Injector, whose Pinch Roll rolls push the wire deep through a Wire Guide so it dissolves in the melt rather than burning off on the surface.

Fume control and process management

Arcing and additions throw off dust and fume, captured by the Fume Extraction system. A Fume Hood over the roof draws fume through the Fume Duct to a Baghouse, whose Filter Bag sleeves strip the dust before the cleaned gas is vented by the Induced Draft Fan. The treatment is run from the Process Control station. A Process PLC sequences heating, stirring, and additions, while the Electrode Regulator holds arc current by raising and lowering each electrode many times a second. The operator checks progress with a disposable Temperature Probe that measures temperature and takes a sample for the lab, watches the Power Meter for the energy balance, and works from the Operator HMI. Because the caster demands steel within a narrow temperature window and an exact composition, the LRF is the buffer and the precision stage of modern steelmaking, sitting between the rough primary furnace and the unforgiving continuous caster.
